An ambassador for positive change with a commitment to develop rural communities, Steven Brown is currently enacting a revolutionary movement of betterment for youth today. His expertise in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) stretches across multiple
disciplines to include curriculum development, career development, positive youth development, engineering, educational pilots, mentoring, career coach and community advocacy. Steven is an advocate for STEAM enrichment in rural areas who possesses diverse skills and abilities within
public educational sectors, engineering and non-profit industries. Steven has 11 years of experience in the engineering fields as a Controls and Project engineer for fortune 500 companies General Electric and Fluor Corporation. Mr. Brown is the Founder and President of a nonprofit
organization, Dreams, Imagination, and Gift Development Program (DIG), which emphasizes providing science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education and enrichment opportunities for rural youth in the U.S. Mr. Brown is fully vested and committed to serve and help every youth realize their true potential and succeed in every endeavor. Through Steven’s leadership, DIG was able to bring the first Summer STEAM Enrichment After-School and Summer Program to the county of Barnwell located in the Promise Zone community of South Carolina. DIG’s educational programs have served more than 200 youth, and attracted over 100 volunteers. Steven is responsible for the architecture of DIG’s curriculums designed to bring real life application to the common core standards of mathematics and science while focusing on methods that work for the culture and demographics of rural area youth. Steven considers DIG’s model of positive youth and growth development to be ideal for rural youth. DIG has also founded the DIG STEM Festival, which is a celebration of STEM in rural communities. The festival is an outdoor event that provides an opportunity for engagement and exchange between children, teens, families, and STEM professionals. The annual event attracts over 2,000 spectators providing STEM exposure to underserved areas.
Steven graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2007 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Steven D.K. Brown has gain valuable engineering experience in his current role as a Controls Project
Engineer at General Electric (GE).
